The Fixation is a new series of posts focused on… well, fixations. Unlike our regular posting schedule, yet much like the fixations that have laid victim to many-a-coveting, lusting men, these posts will come without measured planning (though we’ll aim for a weekly basis). There is no true rhyme or reason behind the uncontrollable yearning of a man’s fixation; a moment that flirts with the dangerous line of ruined caution as he makes an innocent trip to get coffee and returns having acquired a three paycheck timepiece*, or “accidentally” having purchased a vehicle on eBay*, or in a moment of slightly drunken stupor, stumbled out of an Apple Store with bags full of kit*. No, the products you’ll see in this series are not traditional Gear Patrol faire per se, but rather, the documented evidence of an illogical, nonsensical want. We are men after all, and what are without the occasional flaw?
Little know known about this classic 1968 Datsun 2000 Roadster except for the fact that it is currently located at Classic Cars Dallas , it was famously referred to as the “Fairlady Roadster”, and that I want it. Damn you Google… Damn you.
More photos after the jump.
* – for the record, these incidents have actually happened to GP writers who choose to be unnamed.

1968 Datsun 2000 Roadster
This 1968 Datsun SRL311 roadster is offered by the third owner who purchased it from a roadster club member in California. The car has documentation all the way back to the dealer worksheet when the original buyer traded in a Ford Thunderbird for it in 1968. The car was purchased in the Bay Area and spent most of its life in the Modesto, California area. It wears all original paint except on the hood which was blended at some point, and it is in very good unrestored condition having had good maintenance and caring enthusiast owners throughout its life. It is available in Bend, Oregon for $13,500.
The car has led a pampered life but it was driven. The original owners took the car to Solvang and Shasta Datsun meets every year. It was shown in the last 5-7 years at Shasta and received second or third in the most original class. Awards and roadster event items from all over are included, of course. The seller is down to earth and says he “hasn’t gone through the box lately but it is pretty fun.” He contemplated having the car painted but couldn’t pull the trigger, as the originality of the car shows makes it so unique. It has had a minor accident at one time where the seller believes someone backed into the hood. The grill was replaced and the hood blended. That area of the paint is the worst on the car. It has some other small blemishes as would be expected. The rest of the paint is original.
The car now wears Crater Lake Oregon plates, but the original black California plates are also included. The seats have been recovered and carpet replaced. The dash has a couple of very small cracks it it but is still nice and supple. Many are dried out and just wasted. All the gauges work and the stock AM radio functions. The car has new shocks and tires, and the soft top is in great condition and has a boot.
It has never been restored but was always very well maintained, with all regular service done and documented. The timing chains were replaced when due and in the last 10,000 miles the engine and transmission were overhauled. When the current seller got the car is had a set of NOS Solex carbs installed. He says they were a little hard to drive with so he swapped in Z-Therapy SU carbs which he says make it much nicer to drive with smooth and crisp acceleration. He tells us “I imagine it would pull to red line but I don’t run my cars all that hard. I have maybe hit 5500-6000 rpm once or twice. It is going plenty fast if you go through the gears that way.”
Mechanically the car is very sound, and the seller would drive it anywhere at the drop of a hat. “If I haven’t started it in a while I lean in, pull the choke and it will fire right up,” he says. When the engine was gone through it had a B cam installed. It has a new megaphone exhaust installed in the last 200 miles that was the last NOS exhaust Ross at Sports Imports had. Factory carbs and smog equipment are included but off the car.
In the box of awards and historical items is a plaque where the original owners claim the car has over 200,000 miles on it. Prior to the current seller’s purchase the car was serviced and looked over by Mike Young of Datsun Sports. He knows the car and would speak highly of it. He says no way the mileage is that high based on the condition, but the seller believes it to be true.
