The pioneer of hair transplantation was actually a Japanese doctor.
The classic technique of hair transplantation, which forms the basis of FUT and FUE, includes the punch graft method.
The punch graft method involves extracting cylindrical pieces of skin from areas unaffected by hair loss, and transplanting them into areas experiencing hair loss. The main difference from FUE is that grafts are not harvested individually at the follicular unit level.
This punch graft method was pioneered by American physician Dr. Norman Orentreich. In 1952, he performed the punch graft method for the first time on patients with male pattern baldness, conducting 52 surgeries before publishing his findings in 1959.
In the 1950s, the precise mechanism of male pattern baldness was not fully understood. Dr. Orentreich's groundbreaking work demonstrated that grafts from non-balding areas would grow normally when transplanted to balding areas, while grafts from balding areas would not grow normally when transplanted to non-balding areas.
This research established the basis of modern hair transplantation through the concept of donor dominance.
Thanks to such pioneering clinical work and research, Dr. Orentreich became known as the "father of hair transplantation," and from the 1970s onward, punch graft hair transplants became widely practiced worldwide.
There is no doubt about Dr. Orentreich's remarkable achievements. However, about 20 years before Dr. Orentreich, there is a historical fact that a Japanese doctor had already been performing hair transplantation using a similar punch graft method.
