Just What Constitutes Sushi?
日本を代表する食べ物のお寿司は、アメリカでも徐々に人気が高まっていますが、日米ではイメージが相当違うようです。
Sushi, the representative food of Japan, is gaining in popularity in the United States, but the American image of sushi is very different from that of Japan.
英語で”sushi” を検索すると、こんな画像が出てきます。
A google search of “sushi” brings up the following images.
今度は日本語の「寿司」で検索すると、かなり違う画像が出てきます。
However, a search for “寿司” in Japanese brings up a different set of images.
アメリカでは巻き寿司が主流で、外側がご飯であることが多いです。日本では、外側は魚もしくは海苔が多いです。
In America, sushi rolls seem to be the main item with rice on the outside, whereas in Japan the outside is generally either fish itself or seaweed.
巻き寿司には、箸が上手く使えない子供の食べ物というイメージがあるのだと最近知りましたが、近ごろはアメリカ人でも箸を上手に使う人が増えていますよ。
I realized just recently that sushi rolls have an image of being more suited for people who can’t use chopsticks well, such as children, although of course lots of Americans can use chopsticks just fine.
ついでに「鮨」という難しい方の漢字でも検索したら、アメリカの主流である巻き寿司が見事に消えました！
Just for good measure, a search of “鮨” (the more complicated Chinese character) shows NONE of the sushi rolls so popular in America at all!
