What Is March 14th?
明日は3月14日ですね。日本では日付を「平成27年3月14日」のような順番で書きますが、アメリカでは通常、03/14/15になります。さて、ここでもう今日の話題に気付いた人がいたら、相当鋭いです！
Tomorrow is March 14th. In Japan, the order for writing dates is year/month/day (such as Heisei 27.3.14), but in the U.S. the order is usually month/day/year (such as 3/14/15). If you have figured out where I am headed with this, you are in line for the "genious of the day" award.
3月14日と言えば日本ではホワイトデーですが、アメリカでは「パイ（π）デー」です。πとは、3.14159265358・・・の円周率のことですが、お菓子のパイと同じ発音なので、みんなでパイを焼いて食べようという記念日になっています。
In Japan, March 14th is White Day, but in the U.S., March 14th is pi (π) day. π＝3.14159265358..., the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The pronunciation is the same as the food "pie," so this is a day for everyone to bake and eat pies!
例年であれば、3/14 1:59（or 15:9）26.5358・・・のようなπの再現になりますが、今年は、03/14/15 9:26 53.58・・・というパターンでもπを再現できる、100年に一度しか来ない珍しい日です！
In a normal year, you could work out π with 3/14 1:59 (or 15:9):26:53:58, but this year it works out as 3/14/15 9:26:53:58, and this comes around only once every one hundred years.!
ということで、明日はアップルパイでも食べようかな。
So, I think I will be having apple pie for dessert tomorrow.
