If the scalp is oily, with increased dandruff and persistent itching, it could be a sign of seborrheic dermatitis. This condition can also occur in other areas with high sebum secretion, like the sides of the nose, behind the ears, underarms, chest, groin, and behind the knees. Seborrheic dermatitis is caused by an excess accumulation of sebum or the overgrowth of a type of fungus (yeast) called Malassezia that thrives on sebum. When Malassezia breaks down the sebum into fatty acids, the resulting irritation can lead to dermatitis. Other contributing factors include stress, lack of sleep, unbalanced nutrition, abnormalities in vitamin B metabolism, and hormonal imbalances. If diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis, the primary doctor may prescribe topical steroids to reduce inflammation or antifungal agents to control yeast growth. Topical agents refer to medications applied to the skin. If seborrheic dermatitis worsens, it can lead to hair loss in the affected area, which is unrelated to male pattern baldness. With appropriate treatment, symptoms can improve, and hair may regrow.
