Not limited to male pattern baldness, every disease involves two factors: genetics and environment.
Environmental factors include lifestyle habits such as diet, drinking, smoking, exercise, stress, age, and viral infections.
In most cases, a disease is not caused solely by genetic factors or solely by environmental factors.
Depending on the disease, genetic factors may play a stronger role, or environmental factors may be more influential.
What about male pattern baldness?
In male pattern baldness, genetic factors play a stronger role than environmental factors. There are two main genetic factors related to hair thinning:
- The activity level of 5-alpha-reductase, which synthesizes dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
- The sensitivity of androgen receptors that catch dihydrotestosterone.
As repeatedly mentioned, the direct cause of male pattern baldness is dihydrotestosterone, which is produced from testosterone.
If the activity of 5-alpha-reductase, which synthesizes DHT, is high, more DHT will be produced, making male pattern baldness more likely to occur.
Additionally, if the sensitivity of the receptors (androgen receptors) that catch DHT is high, male pattern baldness is more likely to occur."
