It is said that in the future, many jobs will be replaced by a combination of robots and AI (artificial intelligence).

　In the world of hair transplantation, efforts to utilize the combination of robots and AI have been expanding for over a decade. One of the representative examples is the American-made "ARTAS robotic hair transplant," commonly known as ARTAS.

　A pioneering example of introducing robots into the medical world is the surgical system called "da Vinci" developed by the American company Intuitive Surgical. The name is, of course, derived from the Renaissance genius and outstanding anatomist, Leonardo da Vinci.

　Originally developed by the U.S. Army to perform necessary surgeries remotely for soldiers injured on the battlefield, this robot was spun off for civilian use as "da Vinci." Those involved in the development of "da Vinci" subsequently founded a new venture to create ARTAS. Our clinic was the first in Japan to introduce ARTAS, back in December 2012.

　ARTAS is a robot dedicated to FUE procedures. It is mainly used to extract grafts from the donor area. Equipped with four high-performance CCD cameras capable of capturing images 50 times per second, this robot accurately assesses the condition of the donor's scalp based on the captured data. Taking into account factors such as follicular density, orientation, and direction, the physician operates the system to precisely and swiftly extract grafts using the needle system. While this may sound promising for achieving the best FUE, ARTAS is not widely adopted in Japan, and even our clinic, which was an early adopter, does not utilize it much at present.
