1993年ごろ、私は毎日のように羽田空港を利用していました。
9月に新ターミナルビルがオープンし、ずいぶん便利になりました。
しかしはじめて利用した時驚きました。
Around 1993, I was flying out of the Haneda Airport almost every day. In September, the new terminal building opened, which made everything much more convenient.
But there was a surprise waiting for me when I used the new terminal building for the first time.
ぴかぴかの新空港ビルでしたが、改札口と飛行機をつなぐ
ボーディングブリッジの英語表示が間違っていました。
Watch your steps （あなたの階段にご注意ください）。
It was a beautiful new building, but the English sign on the boarding bridge attaching the airplane to the terminal building read
“Watch Your Steps.”
ここは階段があるのではなく、バリアーフリーですよ。
もちろんWatch your step（あしもとにご注意ください）の間違いでした。
There were no steps. In fact, it was barrier free! Of course this was a mistaken version of “Watch Your Step.”
細かいことですが、国際空港だから、正しく表示して欲しいものです。
Perhaps this isn’t a big deal, but I was hoping that being an international airport the signs would be in proper English.
12月1日に第2ターミナルビルがオープンしましたが、
表示は正しい英語になるのでしょうか？
On December 1, 2005, the new Terminal 2 building will open. I wonder whether the signs will be in correct English.
