先日国内線の飛行機に乗りました。
見た限りでは外国人の乗客は私一人でしたが、
機内放送をわざわざ英語でもやってくれました。
The other day I flew on a domestic flight. As far as I could see, I was the only foreigner on board, but the crew went to the trouble of repeating all the announcements in English.
それで思い出しました。
数年前に父親と一緒に国内線に乗ったときに
英語の機内放送が入りました。
父は私に向かって「この放送は何語ですか？」
と聞きました。もちろん英語の文章が合っていましたが、
発音が悪かったので、日本人の片仮名英語発音に
慣れていなかった父は聞き取れませんでした。
This caused me to remember when my father and I took a domestic flight many years ago. When the English announcements were made, my father turned to me and said, “What language are they speaking?” Of course the English was grammatically correct, but the pronunciation wasn’t very good, and so my father, who wasn’t used to katakana pronunciation of English, couldn’t make out what they were saying.
これじゃ、英語の放送は意味をなさないと思いました。
I wondered then whether there was any point in making English announcements at all if the pronunciation was so bad.
