Japan Declares War on the U.S. Just 83 Years after Opening to the World
jyouyaku

The opening of Japan began near the end of the Edo Period with the conclusion of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States in 1858.Just 83 years later in December 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor (Base) in Hawaii and declared war against the United States.

The United States, which had forced the opening of the country and thereby created the chance for Japan to become a modern nation, fell into the position of being forced to fight against Japan, which had modernized at astounding speed. This is quite ironic because if Admiral Perry had not sought for opening of the country and Japan had continued its closed door policy, the Pacific War probably would not have occurred.

When the war began, the A6M Zero fighter aircraft, which was the main fighter aircraft employed by the Japanese navy in the Pearl Harbor attack, was superior in performance to any aircraft the United States had. It was totally without defensive mechanisms, but in armaments, climbing capability, turning and banking capability, and cruising range, the Zero surpassed any U.S. military fighter aircraft.

Airplanes were first invented by the American Wright Brothers in 1903. Less than forty years later, Japan had already developed a fighter aircraft superior to that of the United States.

Traditionally, fighter aircraft embody the leading technology of developed countries and symbolize national military strength. In fighter aircraft performance, America had been completely bested by Japan.

For America, a country which is not satisfied unless it is number one in everything, this was a terrible loss of face. Needless to say, after that the American military poured all its resources into the development of new fighter aircraft.
